10 Questions with Nick Varady

1. Introduction: What's your story?

Hi I'm Nick!

The first thing to know about me is i'm a people person. I'm fascinated by people's stories, where people come from, what makes them tick and the flavour of their relationships with those around them. Wedding photography allows me the opportunity to help shape peoples stories - and I love that! You can expect to find me very friendly to put you at ease with the whole wedding process and especially in front of the camera.

When i'm not capturing weddings and family portraits, you can find me riding my motorcycle (a classic '98 Virago) watching Liverpool in the premier league or playing with my 4 kids.

2. How long have you been shooting weddings and how many weddings have you photographed?

I found my way to weddings via some friends who were getting married on a shoestring budget. I had been doing some family shoots, but fell in love instantly with the excitement and creative challenge of weddings. Since 2019 I have lived in Sydney, Portland (USA) and Newcastle and have continued to photograph people along the way. I'm up to about 45 weddings and countless family sessions so know my way around how to capture people at their best!

3. How would you describe your photography style?

I'd describe my style as classic, candid, worm and joy filled. I like to help people feel comfortable and enjoy a photoshoot so give lots of directions and prompts to help you just enjoy your family in a natural way. I do like to get creative as well so you'll occasionally find me laying on the ground for a good angle or holding things in front of the lens or stealing you for 5 mins because there's some cool light.

4. How well in advance should couples book their wedding photographer?

Most weddings are in the shoulder seasons (spring and late summer/autumn) so if you're getting married around then i'd recommend enquiring at least 12 months in advance to secure your date. For off season weddings, a shorter lead time is ok. One way or another, the best time to make an enquiry and start asking questions is right now! I think it's really important to meet and talk through your day, you'll be surprised how helpful you will find it as you make plans and it's usually important for us to make sure we're a good fit for one another before booking. I'm always up for a coffee :)

5. What are the different packages that you offer and which one is your most popular package?

The key determining factor for packages is time - how long do you want me for, or how much of your day do you want me to capture? For most weddings this is about 7-8 hours.

The next question is whether you'd like to have video, or include other things like an engagement shoot or an album. My goal is always to design a package that suits your specific needs and budget, so don't hesitate to ask for what you want!

6. Are you the wedding photographer who will be shooting on the wedding day? Who else is there in your team?

Most of the time it's just me on your wedding day! But if you want video I'll have a videographer along as well to capture you in gorgeous slow-mo audio visual.

7. Do you charge a travel fee? For what distance? What does that cover?

Most of my weddings are in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. I'm happy to travel to Sydney, Port Stephens, or other locations north and west of Newcastle. Beyond a 100km distance a travel fee will incur.

8. Are albums or prints included in your packages?

I 100% recommend getting your photos printed! It's not the same looking at them on screens. I have a professional album service which produces these stunning bound albums with high quality prints and a range of upgrade options. You're way more likely to actually sit down and look through an album so I think it's worth the investment.

9. How long after the wedding will the couple receive their wedding photos? How will they be delivered?

I don't think you should wait for months for your wedding photos! So I aim to get you the full gallery at the latest by 4 weeks after your wedding. The day after i'll send you through some sneak peek photos because it's alwyas nice to have something to post right away! After you receive your online gallery i'll also send you a little bow with the full gallery again on USB and some mounted prints.

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

To book in I require a 10% non-refundable deposit - it represents a commitment for both of us to make this happen. Full payment is required a month before your wedding date, that way we can go into the day completely focused on just getting you married and enjoying the day. If for some reason you need to cancel your wedding, the best thing to do is just get in touch and we'll talk it through. I had that happen during COVID and we always found a mututally agreeable solution. I have relationships with other photographers so if tragedy strikes and I can't fulfil my commitment to you, i'll find you a replacement - it's your wedding day no way jose will I leave you floundering!
