10 Questions with Anne Miller

1. Introduction: What's your story?

Hello, I’m so excited to introduce myself! I’m Anne, a full-time marriage celebrant based in Perth, Western Australia. I truly love weddings, and I still can’t believe going to ‘work’ means sharing and celebrating one of the happiest and exciting days in your life.

I’m here to ensure that you have a 5-star experience from our first chat over a coffee or wine, to the day you marry the love of your life in a heartfelt, fun, warm, engaging and personalised ceremony.

Bringing your wedding dream to reality is where I shine. Super-organised with an eye for detail, inclusive and friendly, and a great writer and storyteller, are just some of my strengths that will make your getting married journey a breeze, and will have your guests walking away saying, “that was the best ceremony I’ve ever been too!”

Over the last 10 years I’ve married 1000+ couples, some have had the big, white, high-class wedding, others a little intimate wedding with only a few of their favourite people, to super secretive elopements that I specialise in – and I’ve loved every single one of them!

As an experienced and award-winning marriage celebrant, dedicated to you and your wedding day – you’re going to have the best time of your lives! I’ll be at the end of the phone ready to answer your questions and guide you through the getting married process. On your wedding day, I’ll be the one making sure your ceremony runs smoothly; and will deliver the script you’ve approved in a relaxed, conversational and light-hearted way.

A little more about me. I'm a wife to Mike, mum to Kate and Tom, nanny to Ted and Jack, and food preparer for our pooch, Harry. We've lived in our federation home in Mount Lawley for over 40 years, and watching couple's reactions when they walk in and see how beautiful it is, especially when they're going to be married there, is something that makes me smile every time.

I love music, travelling and taking off on spontaneous holidays, a glass of bubbles (or two), a long (long) lunch with family and friends, or just sitting on the beach with a good book. I've been a school and education leader, published author, a stage director and event coordinator, and I'm still performing with a trio called Bling. Yes! I'm living every moment to the max!

There’s so much more for me to tell you, but let’s leave that for when we meet. I warmly welcome all enquiries and can’t wait to celebrate your love!

2. What's your experience as a marriage celebrant? How many weddings have you done?

Watching our daughter get married ten years ago, was the moment when I knew I wanted to become a celebrant, and six months later, that is exactly what I did!

Since then, I’ve officiated over 1000 legal marriage ceremonies in and around Perth, the Swan Valley, out in the wheatbelt, down in the south-west, in wineries, parks, onboard boats – even on the beach after a couple sky jumped out of a plane over Rottnest!

Being full time, I’m able to marry you wherever you want, on any day, and at any time.

With more couples choosing to avoid the financial hangover of a big wedding, I offer and specialise in intimate elopements, micro-weddings and ceremonies where you can just sign the marriage documents either in my home, your home or favourite bar or café. I have so many options to suggest that will fit with your budget and the vibe you’re wanting for your special day.

If a legal marriage ceremony is not what you’re looking for, I also do renewal of vows for couples who want to say, ‘we do again’, and commitment ceremonies for those ready to lock their love in – without the legal paperwork.

3. How far in advance do couples need to secure your services?

To be honest, gone are the days where couples are booking their wedding date two to three years in advance – thanks Covid!

So, when should you book?

If you're having a Saturday wedding and in the peak wedding months here in WA – March/April and October/November – book in quick! Those dates get snapped up very quickly. I really dislike sending replies to wedding inquiries saying 'sorry I'm booked'.

The only other thing to keep in mind when you're ready to book me as your celebrant, is the one-month legal requirement from lodging the Notice of Intended Marriage until you can be married. There are a few situations where a Shortening of Time will be approved by the Registrar of Births Deaths Marriages here in Perth - and not knowing about the waiting period or forgetting to get that done, aren't on the list.

4. How would you describe your ceremony style?

I always use the word “conversational”, but what exactly does that mean?

I’m not one for standing up the front telling your story as if you're not there. With all the fabulous things you've shared with me while planning your ceremony - either in the quick and easy to answer questionnaires, or in our planning meeting, I'll write your ceremony so it sounds like we're having a conversation, interacting with each other, interacting with your guests, all having a bit of giggle with you, not at you.

I’m not a stand-up comedian but I will keep it light-hearted. I will not swear or say anything that will make Nana have heart palpations.

I will talk you through your ceremony so there's no awkward moments where you, or your wedding party, are left wondering what they need to do. I have your back the whole way through from start to finish!

5. What are your fees for a wedding?

My fees range from $450 for a legal only ceremony to $1200 for a full-service ceremony located up to 50kms from the Perth CBD.

Not everyone fits in the ceremony options I offer, so I’m more than happy to create a quote that works within your budget and doesn’t skip on service or attention to you in the lead up to your big day.

I can also create a ceremony package that includes other wedding services such as photography, videography, styling and florals, even live musicians.

6. What do you wear when you officiate a wedding?

When we meet to plan your ceremony, I will always ask you what you'd like me to wear for your wedding, and what is the dress code.

Some couples like me to compliment their wedding party colours, while others give me free reign. Sometimes they stipulate not wearing black for cultural reasons or personal choice, while others will specifically request to dress in something elegant suitable for a black tie event.

I have a large wardrobe full of dresses that will work for just about any wedding, and if I don't, you're going to give me the perfect reason to add to my collection.

Whatever I wear, it will be dressy, elegant, and professional... unless you're having a 'yee-ha' country wedding out in the bush and want me to bring my boots and broad brimmed hat.

7. How many pre-wedding sessions will the couple need to have with you?

If you book a full-service ceremony I'm there at your beck and call. We can meet either in person or online in a video call, whatever works best for you.

If you are having a simple legals only ceremony, we'll have one in person or online call to lodge the Notice of Intended Marriage.

Rehearsals are always a discussion point. Should we have one or not? My thoughts are that you don't need one. But if it will make you feel more comfortable and less likely to stress in the lead up to your wedding day - we'll book an onsite practice in the week before your wedding.

8. Will you be able to create a personalised ceremony?

When you choose my full-service wedding package, your ceremony will be written from scratch so that it authentically reflects you as a couple and your love story so far.

The only words where I do a ‘cut and paste’ is the legal description of marriage in Australia, and my introduction where I let your guests know my name, and that I’m authorised to solemnise (took me a while to say that word correctly) your marriage.

Everything else that goes into your ceremony – is your choice!

Creative writing and engaging story telling are where my strengths shine and we’ll work together to create a ceremony that just shouts of you two!

9. Are you available to travel if needed?

I can travel to wherever you are getting married - intrastate, interstate or internationally (although we'll need to do the legals before heading overseas as I'm only authorised to officiate marriages here in Australia).

I will charge a travel fee that is dependent on the type of ceremony you are having, and the location, but I always keep the fee to a minimum based on the ATO recommended rates.

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

Weddings and elopements are difficult enough to plan, so if you need to cancel, postpone or reschedule your date, and for whatever reason, I will always try to find a solution that works for you and me, and without any extra charge. It really depends on the circumstances and how much work I’ve done for you.

My cancellation, postponement, rescheduling and refund policy is fully transparent and explained in detail within the Contract that you will receive, before you lock in your wedding date.

My booking fee is only $300.
