10 Questions with Dan Grant

1. Introduction: What's your story?

HI, I'm Dan Grant and I am a Celebrant. How did I get into this you ask. Well, with a background as a professional trainer, and being in that age bracket that a lot of my friends were getting married, I spent a reasonable amount of time being told "you can publicly speak and have a big voice. Want to MC our reception?" This was the beginning of my journey into the wedding industry. It was a while down the track before I was standing at a wedding, watching the Celebrant do her work, that it dawned on me. Weddings are great fun; I love to make people smile and thrive on helping others to attain their joy, so why not figure out how to do this? So, I off and studied, learned the craft of a Celebrant, then started crafting and performing ceremonies.

I love to deliver a really personalised story, so I take the time to get to know my couples so I can truly tell their story. And if they want something a little extra, a cultural tradition or any other type of ritual that's important to them, I'm more than happy to oblige.

2. What's your experience as a marriage celebrant? How many weddings have you done?

In the 5 years since I became a Celebrant, I've thus far had the pleasure of performing 65 weddings! I love spending the time crafting and delivering unique ceremonies, and even enjoy the odd legals only.

3. How far in advance do couples need to secure your services?

You can book me as far out as you like, though I can't start any of the formal work until a maximum of 18 months out, or a minimum of 1 month. I'm always happy to check my calendar and see if I can fit couples in.

4. How would you describe your ceremony style?

My style I would describe as relaxed, yet still professional; I aim to make my couples as comfortable as possible on their wedding day. Sure, I can be formal, but if you're looking for the sort of Celebrant who isn't afraid to chuck in the odd joke and have a laugh to break the tension, I'm your guy!

5. What are your fees for a wedding?

What do I charge and what do you get? Pricing and inclusions:

My fee is $800, which gets all paperwork required completed and lodged, and a custom written and delivered ceremony that is exactly how and what you want. I can also supply my PA for microphones as well as ceremony music. If needed, I also have a table and chairs for the signing part of the ceremony. These are all factored into my fee.

I also like to do an obligation free meet and greet over coffee (or wine) just so my couples have a chance to make sure I'm the right Celebrant for them.

I also offer a "legals only package" which is the paperwork and a basic ceremony for $600.

6. What do you wear when you officiate a wedding?

What do you want me to wear? I offer a selection of suits in Navy, Charcoal and Light Grey, but I'll wear what my couples want me too. If that's a theme, then I'm up for it. If it's just neat and casual, no problem there either.

7. How many pre-wedding sessions will the couple need to have with you?

I like to do an upfront obligation free meet and greet with my couples, usually over a coffee (or a nice glass of wine) so they have a chance to see if we click as individuals. From there I catch up for the actual booking meeting where we complete the paperwork, and I interview my couples to learn their story as well as get a really good understanding of how they want their ceremony structured. I then have to meet each partner from the couple individually to do the consent meeting. That's generally how I operate, but if couples want additional meetings or rehearsals, we discuss that on an as needs basis.

8. Will you be able to create a personalised ceremony?

Personalised ceremonies are my go-to, and if my couples want to add any personalised or cultural rituals, more than happy to oblige.

9. Are you available to travel if needed?

I'm ok to travel, though if it's more than 90 minutes one way, I would apply a travel fee. But hey, if a couple wants to pay to put me on a plane and lodge me in a hotel, I'm not going to say no!

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

REFUNDS
1. THE FEE PAID UNDER ITEM 1 IS NOT REFUNDABLE (the deposit)
2. Fees paid for item 2 may be refunded if fourteen (14) days’ notice of cancellation has been provided to the celebrant (Administration and documentation of all marriage documents)
3. For all fees under item 3, if notice has not been received by the celebrant fourteen (14) days in advance the fee may not be refunded at the celebrant’s discretion (Writing of custom ceremony and Solemnisation of marriage by civil marriage celebrant)
4. In any other case, the celebrant may refund the fee
