10 Questions with Kirsty Bremner

1. Introduction: What's your story?

Hello!

Im Kirsty Bremner, Founder at Kirsty Bremner Beauty. I moved from New Zealand to Melbourne 24 years ago to study make up. Ive always loved painting, drawing and anything creative so I knew I had to find a great course to learn the art of make up. I then moved to Sydney to build my network and start my business. Since then i've lived and worked in London, but love the Sydney summers, Beaches and lifestyle!

I've been in the industry now for 23 years, and still love doing hair and make up. Weddings are a huge part of my business and the feeling I get from making someone feel the most beautiful the have ever felt for their wedding day is the best part of my job! It's such a special day to be part of and my goal is to make everything as seamless, easy and enjoyable as possible, from the first contact with a bride, to the trial, then the day.

My weddings vary from Micro weddings - to parties of 10! I work with an incredible team of hair and make-up artists to bring the day together and make sure everyone looks and feels amazing, and has the best day!

2. What's your experience as a bridal hair & makeup artist? How many brides are in there in your portfolio?

4. Do you have a team of assistants or will you be the only artist that day? What will happen if you're sick or have an emergency on the wedding day?

My weddings range from Micro weddings - to bridal parties of 10!

I will be the lead artist on the day, and will organise as many artists as needed for you on the day. I work with an extremely talented team of hair and make up artists, all extremely reliable and selected by myself to suit the style and vision the bride has.

If an emergency, I will organise a replacement artist. I can honestly say in my 23 years doing weddings I have not once had to make this call!

5. Do you charge a travel fee? For what distance? What does that cover?

I do charge a travel fee, if the location is 20kms outside of Sydney CBD. This is charged at 0.95c per kms.

This is charged per artist. This includes tolls.

6. Can the bride book a wedding makeup trial appointment and will you also do a trial before the wedding?

I always recommend a trial! This is the perfect opportunity bring together all the ideas and inspiration looks you have for the wedding day. It's also important to see how the make up and hair holds up on the trial day, and if there is any tweaks or changes that need to be made for the wedding day. I encourage my brides on the trial day to take pics as well to see how everything photographs.

In some cases if the bride requests no trial, I like to allow more time on the wedding day and great communication with reference pics of inspiration and of the bride herself, so we are as prepared as possible for the day.

7. What beauty products do you use and would you be open to the bride using her own make-up?

My kit has a big range of brands that i've used, tried and tested over the years and I know work well and have longevity for the day.

I use Charlotte Tilbury, Nars, Mac, Dior, Giorgio Armani, Patrick Ta, Tarte, Model Rock Lashes and other brands I trust and love.

If the bride has sensitive skin, or would prefer to use her own make-up, I am fine with this, but would definitely recommend a trial to see how the products last and if they will be suitable for the day.

With Hair, I use a range of products that work well to protect the hair, give volume, hold or shine depending on the requested style. I use brands like Color Wow, UNITE, Eleven, Natalie Ann, Nak just to name a few.

8. How can you make the bride's wedding makeup last and look good in photos?

Skin Prep - I encourage a facial a few weeks before, and lots of water so the skin is hydrated and we can have the skin looking as flawless as possible.

I prep the skin first before applying any make-up, This could include under eye patches, lip balm or an oil depending on what the skin needs.

I always use a primer suitable for the skin I am working on, and use a base that compliments the skin and finish we are going for. I Layer the products, use setting powders and setting spray to give a long lasting finish. I used long wearing and waterproof eye products.

I know all the foundations I use look flawless on camera, and last the distance.

I also recommend a touch up kit to be used during the day, this usually includes a blotting powder or papers, lip products, bobby bins, mini hair spray and comb. (if the veil needs to be removed by bridesmaids, I give instructions on how to remove and tidy hair after).

9. How long will makeup take on the day and how long will you be staying for on the day?

I like to allow 2-2.5 hours for the brides hair and make up. This can be less depending on the style. Having a trial before hand is a great day to determine how much time we need on the day. The trial can sometimes be a longer appointment that the actual wedding day as this is the time to tweak and try options.

I stay until a time requested by the bride. If I need to apply the veil after they get dressed and apply an body make up I will stay. If the Bride doesnt have a veil or would prefer bridesmaids to put on then I will go when make up and hair is finished. If the bridesmaids are applying the veil, I will show them how to attach and remove.
